Matthew 13:1-23
Parables are not ‘earthly stories with heavenly meaning’ or folky fables to communicate a timeless truth. His parables invite hearers to understand how he was fulfilling the Old Testament as he launched God’s kingdom into the world. They invite us to see the world and Jesus in new ways. He quotes Isaiah 6 to explain that the truth is often rejected by those with hard hearts, meaning they miss out on God’s blessing. How do we understand why people react differently to Jesus? This parable shows us why. It’s not a failure of God’s word.
