Lament: When I Question God
Psalm 13 David launches into questions many of us ask. Why does the Lord who determines times and seasons let this go on for so long? Am I forgotten? Has God abandoned me? How long will my mind be in torment? Even though David’s feelings are caused by the threat of enemies, we each can resonate with feeling these things. Many people are unaware that they’re ‘allowed’ to pray this way. What does David do and how does he find trust in God again?

When we read and pray the Psalms, they don’t just express how we feel, they show us how we’re doing like a mirror shows us things that we can’t see otherwise. Yet the Psalms don’t just express how we feel or show us who we are; they change us. St Ambrose of Milan said: “The delightful book of the Psalms provides a true gymnasium for the soul with exercises to develop every virtue.” The Psalms shouldn’t be an echo chamber of our own prayers, doubts, laments, and praise. They move us further on, towards God in wonder, love and praise.
