What God joins together
Genesis 24 After Sarah’s death in the previous chapter, the story returns to the crucial question: How will God’s promise to bless the world continue through Abraham’s line? Their son Isaac is born… now what? How will God’s steadfast love to his people show itself? Enter Rebekah. Isaac mustn’t marry a Canaanite (because of their idolatry and the curse from Genesis 9:24-27). Abraham’s line must be distinct from those around them in the land, just as Christians today must be distinct in our world, including in relationships. Abraham’s servant meets Rebekah at a well and the circumstances seem to answer his prayers for guidance. Rebekah agrees to go so she can marry Isaac, leaving all behind, to an unknown place. She is like a new Abraham, as bold as he was. Rebekah’s family bless her with words similar to how God blessed Abraham (Genesis 24:6). The Bible has clear instructions in parts, but most of it is story. Stories of people messing up. Stories of people discovering God’s grace. Stories we can learn wisdom from. The middle bit of Genesis tells the story of three generations who discover what it means to be God’s people in God’s plan for his world. And they don’t always get it right. Their stories include: marriage problems, death and grief, parenting struggles, choosing a spouse, sexual immorality, deception, reproductive ethics, unjust employers, relationships that distort God’s design, the strength of friendship, birth, infertility, abuse, betrayal, forgiveness, aging, value of life from womb to tomb, loneliness, racism, politics, war, buying land, wealth management, and learning wisdom from all the ambiguity of ordinary life trying to trust God in a fallen world. We face many issues in life where we have to ask: What does it mean to be God’s people in this? What’s God’s plan for it?
